Welcome to Kathmandu, the vibrant capital of Nepal. Our representative will meet you at Tribhuvan International Airport and transfer you to your hotel in Thamel, a lively neighborhood full of restaurants, bars, and shops selling Nepali handicrafts and trekking gear. Spend the afternoon exploring the local market. Later, meet your trek guide, ask any questions about the Everest Base Camp trek, and receive a full trek briefing.
Drive about four hours from Kathmandu to Manthali Airport, then take the roughly 20-minute scenic flight to Lukla. Our experienced local porters will meet you on arrival, and you’ll begin the trek to Phakding. Along the trail you’ll pass fluttering Tibetan prayer flags and hear local people reciting mantras. The trek covers 6.2 km (3.8 miles) in 3 to 4 hours, so you’ll arrive with plenty of time to rest.
Today’s trail winds through forests, traditional villages, plowed fields, and yak pastures. At the entrance to Sagarmatha National Park, you’ll see Thamserku rising overhead. After lunch, continue to Namche Bazaar, the largest Sherpa village in the Khumbu region. Pick up any last-minute supplies, such as chocolate, and explore the local market. The trek covers 7.4 km (4.6 miles) in 5 to 6 hours.
Your body needs time to adjust to the altitude, and the best way to do that is to stay active. Hike around the area or visit the school founded by Sir Edmund Hillary in Khumjung village. Enjoy views of Kwangde, Thamserku, Kangtega, Nuptse, Lhotse, Ama Dablam, and Mount Everest, and learn about Sherpa culture and history.
This section has few steep climbs or descents, leaving you free to take photos of the stupas, prayer flags, and mani walls along the way. On arrival, visit Tengboche Monastery, which has panoramic mountain views. With luck, you may be able to attend a service and light butter lamps at this sacred site. The trek covers 9.2 km (5.7 miles) in 5 to 6 hours.
The trail is scenic but more challenging today. Follow the Imja Khola river before climbing to the windswept fields of Dingboche, where Ama Dablam comes into spectacular view. Spend the afternoon relaxing and taking in the surrounding peaks. The trek covers 12 km (7.45 miles) in 4 to 5 hours, ending at your tea house for the night.
Take a hike around Dingboche to help your body adjust to the altitude. One popular option is the climb toward the base of Nangkar Tshang Peak, which has sacred sites and views of Mount Makalu (3.5 to 5 hours). If you prefer a lighter day, explore the village and meet the friendly locals.
Trek through the Pheriche Valley and alpine scrub, with views of Tawoche and Cholatse and Ama Dablam towering behind you. After crossing Thokla Pass, you’ll reach Lobuche. The trek covers 8.5 km (5.2 miles) in 4 to 5 hours.
This is the big day. Trek to Gorakshep, then hike to Kala Patthar, the best viewpoint for Mount Everest. If the weather is unclear, we may swap the plan, visiting Kala Patthar the next morning and hiking to Everest Base Camp today. The day covers 15 km (9.3 miles) in 6 to 7 hours.
If you haven’t yet reached Everest Base Camp or Kala Patthar, you’ll do so this morning. After breakfast, descend to Pheriche, home to the Himalayan Rescue Association Clinic, where you can learn about altitude sickness and how to prevent it. The trek takes 7 to 8 hours.
Descend to Namche Bazaar, with a few uphill sections along the way. The forests and greenery return as you approach. Celebrate your achievement with a well-earned beer and share your photos with loved ones. The trek covers 16 km (9.9 miles) in 6 to 7 hours.
On your final day of trekking, say goodbye to the Khumbu Valley and Mount Everest, taking a last look at the Himalayan peaks before the walk to Lukla. The trek covers 16 km (9.9 miles) in 5 to 6 hours.
Fly back to Kathmandu, arriving for brunch or early afternoon depending on weather. Spend the rest of the day shopping for souvenirs, then join us for a farewell dinner in the evening.
After breakfast, our representative will transfer you to Tribhuvan International Airport for your onward flight.
