Discover the spiritual heart of Varanasi on a 5-hour guided walking tour through the city’s ancient streets, temples, markets and sacred ghats. Led by a knowledgeable local guide, this experience takes you beyond the usual tourist sights and into the historic lanes of Old Varanasi.
The tour begins at 2:30 PM outside Hotel Ganges Grand in Godowlia. We will walk through the lively Godowlia Market before entering the fascinating old streets of Varanasi. Along the way, you will discover ancient temples, sacred water tanks, historic buildings and some of the most atmospheric corners of the city.
After exploring the old city, take a short tea break before heading to Dashashwamedh Ghat for the spectacular evening Ganga Aarti. Your seat will be reserved on a balcony, giving you a comfortable elevated view of the ceremony.
Meet your local guide at 2:30 PM outside Hotel Ganges Grand, Godowlia. After a short introduction, we begin our walk through the busy streets of central Varanasi.
Our first section takes us through Godowlia Market, one of the busiest areas of the old city. From here, we continue along Manmandir Street, exploring the narrow lanes and historic surroundings that make Varanasi so unique.
We then pass by Tripura Bhairavi and continue towards the Meer Ghat area.
The walk continues towards the Vishalakshi Temple, one of the important Shakti temples of Varanasi. Your guide will explain the religious and cultural importance of the area.
We then continue towards the Kashi Vishwanath Temple Corridor, an important landmark in modern Varanasi that connects the temple area with the Ganges.
Next, we visit the beautiful Nepali Temple, known for its distinctive architecture.
From here, we continue towards Manikarnika Ghat, one of the oldest and most sacred cremation grounds in Varanasi. Your local guide will explain the traditions and significance of this sacred place while ensuring that the visit is conducted respectfully.
We also see Manikarnika Kund and continue towards the river to view the famous Ratneshwar Mahadev Temple, which is known for its unusual leaning appearance.
After exploring the riverside area, we begin our return walk through the old city. We pass through the colourful Bansphatak Flower Market, where flowers are sold for temple offerings and daily rituals.
We then pass by Kashi Vishwanath Temple Gate No. 4 before completing the main walking portion of the experience at around 4:30 PM.
After approximately two hours of walking through the old city, we take a short tea break. This gives you some time to relax before the evening’s main ceremony.
After the break, we make our way towards Dashashwamedh Ghat for the famous evening Ganga Aarti.
The Ganga Aarti at Dashashwamedh Ghat is one of the most memorable experiences in Varanasi. As evening falls, priests perform a traditional river worship ceremony accompanied by lamps, incense, bells, chants and devotional music.
For this tour, your balcony seat will be reserved in advance, allowing you to watch the ceremony from an elevated and more comfortable viewing position rather than standing in the crowded area along the ghat.
The exact atmosphere can vary depending on the season, crowd and ceremony arrangements, but the evening Ganga Aarti remains one of the highlights of any visit to Varanasi.
After the Ganga Aarti, the tour officially ends at Dashashwamedh Ghat. You are then free to continue exploring Varanasi or have dinner at your own pace.
If you are looking for somewhere nearby to eat, Shree Cafe and Niyati Cafe are convenient options in the surrounding area.
